This stunning example of adaptive reuse involved the rehabilitation of the 926,000-square-foot, 5-story Main Post Office at a cost of $252 million. While preserving a significant historical treasure, the project will have a catalytic impact on future development of West Philadelphia. The facility will house a major federal agency employing over 5,000 people, bring new vitality, business opportunities and improved security to the neighborhood. The Main Post Office is located across Market Street from nearby 30th Street Station, West Philadelphia's principal transportation hub, which offers accessible public transport (regional rail, Amtrak, and nearby subway and bus routes) to the agency’s employees.
Designed to exceed LEED Silver environmental criteria, the project features an inventive new four-story light well that brings abundant natural light deep into the building. An inspired confluence of commercial, institutional and governmental stakeholders made this extraordinary adaptive reuse and historic restoration project possible. And has helped to resurrect Philadelphia's Depression-era vision of a revitalized West Philadelphia gateway.
