As a suburban community, Florin Hill exemplifies the kind of sustainable development that has the potential to transform the way that Pennsylvania grows. Florin Hill is a mixed-use community with a variety of housing options, including affordable housing, to meet the needs of all residents. With a total size of 483 housing units and 75,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, Florin Hill stood out among all of this year’s entries as a bold and ambitious smart growth project. Suburban communities across Pennsylvania should look to Florin Hill as a new model for development. It accommodates the increased housing and business needs of a growing community while preserving open space. The jury was in consensus that this project rose above the playing field, and it deserves the special recognition of the 2009 Commonwealth Gold Award.
