Public Infrastructure Projects
Some may wonder why a parking garage is being recognized at a smart growth awards program, but the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s new parking facility is no ordinary garage. By building the structure into the hillside and adding a sculpture garden to the top, this garage raises the bar on what parking can be. It creatively maximizes the use of existing space in the urban form to solve long-term parking and traffic issues while enhancing the urban form. The project is designed to reduce congestion in the vicinity of the museum, and it incorporates many features to improve its environmental impact. These include natural ventilation, energy efficient lighting, and surfaces designed to filter stormwater before it reaches the Schuylkill River.
