Pennsylvania budget proposals threaten large cuts that could close State Parks and State Forests, including popular climbing areas such as Ralph Stover State Park.

In the first round of budget proposals, the Pennsylvania State Senate countered Governor Rendells budget with Senate Bill 850 which recommended major cuts to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) budget and thus force the closing of 35 State Parks and many State Forest roads. Ralph Stove State Park (aka High Rocks), a popular climbing area in Eastern PA, was one of the parks listed for potential closure. Senate Bill 850 was defeated in the House and budget negations are still underway, but large cuts remain likely for DCNRs budget. Officials at DCNR say its too early to tell what may happen to the State Parks and State Forest roads since there is no budget in place. By law, Pennsylvania is to have a budget by each June 30 for the new fiscal year that begins July 1.

We need your help to convince PA legislators that they should prioritize access to valuable state public lands. If Pennsylvania's State Parks and State Forests are important to youespecially those that contain climbing areasthen write your representatives and urge them to support a budget that doesnt deprive your state public lands and its users.
